Simon in his studio on Eel Pie Island, February 2022.

About Simon

I am not a musician but I used to be in jazz, the business side mainly, having held roles at both Jazz FM radio and Ronnie Scott’s Club. But there was always the promise to myself that when the opportunity arose I would change tack to sculpture which I have been practising for over 25 years. Then along came Covid and here we are, with a studio on Eel Pie Island in the river at Twickenham. I like jazz, obviously, and find both the musicians and the music good material and inspiration for sculptures. Some pieces stick to the tune, some improvise. Like jazz.

About Eel Pie Island

Sitting in the river at Twickenham is Eel Pie Island, accessible only by footbridge or boat. It is home to residents, businesses, boatyards, rowing clubs and artists. The Island has heritage in music, back in the 60’s the old hotel used to stage jazz nights on Sundays, and then Rhythm and Blues gigs on Wednesdays - house band the Rolling Stones for a while. Then the hotel burnt down. There’s a fine museum in Twickenham about that and other things Eel Pie. The island is private but there are artist open studio weekends twice a year. Look for the dates and info about all the artists on the island at www.eelpieislandartists.co.uk
